Grade 1

Message from the Grade One Team

Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her school career! First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisition of new skills is accelerated. First graders develop fundamental academic and social skills through developing work habits, encouraging problem solving and decision making. The Grade One Team aims to make your child’s first grade experience a fun and exciting one.

Language Arts

The Grade One curriculum is based on phonetic awareness, reading and writing. It offers a research-based combination of systematic skills development, and literature to make every child a successful reader. It incorporates reading, grammar, spelling and writing activities.

Mathematics is taught using a hands-on activity based approach. Students will continue to develop basic skills necessary for success in number awareness and the basic operations. They are taught to think mathematically and relate their math work to real life problems.

Students will learn the scientific method of questioning, planning, conducting investigations and drawing conclusions. Through the use of appropriate tools and techniques they will gather data, thinking critically and logically about relationships between evidence and explanations. They will be introduced to different to the three areas of science; life, physical and earth science.

Social Studies

History and Social Studies are incorporated into one framework which serves as a guideline for students to become familiar with events and people of other times and places, and basically to become better citizens in their own community.

We strive each day to make learning a fun and enriching process for your child. We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation this year.
