Grade 4

A Message from the Grade 4 Team

The whole Grade 4 team would like to extend a warm welcome to you all. We are dedicated to helping your child develop the skills they need to grow into capable, lifelong learners. We are invested in your child’s future and hope to secure your support in motivating them to become independent, happy learners. We know that together we can help your child to take pride in themselves, maintain a positive outlook no matter what challenges they face, and that we can drive your child to succeed in grade 4 and onwards with their future life.

Language Arts

This year, our primary aim is to improve your child’s ability to read and to apply concepts which they learn through their reading in their writing. Your child will become better at reading, speaking and listening when those around them model those skills. Please encourage reading of all types – books, newspapers, and magazines. Discussions based on television, news accounts, or daily activities, where you ask the child to support his or her opinion, will help develop self-confidence and higher level thinking.

In Grade 4, instructional time is focused on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

In science we hope to help your child to understand and explore a range of concepts. Our curriculum allows children to get involved practically in the lab sessions, and covers the theory which they need to understand and learn new concepts. We cover concepts ranging from the scientific method, plants and animals and the ecosystem to the solar system, electricity and magnetism. We hope to have all children leave grade 4 motivated and inspired to learn about the world in which they live.

Social Studies

Through the social studies curriculum, the children will learn about aspects of geography and history in the world around them including landforms, climate, locations, and boundaries. They will learn about the Arabian Peninsula before Islam and the Golden Age of Islam. The grade 4 curriculum will also give the children an opportunity to learn about customs and cultures, Ancient Egypt and how people and the environment are inextricably linked.

We are looking forward to a year full of growth, inquiry, and excitement for your children. You can aid your child’s success by giving positive encouragement and concern.

We ask you to provide a quiet atmosphere for homework, and encourage a responsible attitude towards the completion of assignments.

If, at any time, you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
